Abstract

The development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has brought significant changes to higher education, including teaching and learning processes at universities. This study aims to explore the level of knowledge, utilization patterns, benefits, and challenges faced by students of the Faculty of Islamic Studies at Universitas Muhammadiyah Aceh (FAI Unmuha) in using AI as an academic support tool in the Educational Statistics course. The study employed a mixed-methods approach with a descriptive qualitative and quantitative design. Data were collected through questionnaires and interviews involving 21 randomly selected respondents. The results indicate that 85.71% of students have used AI, with commonly used applications including ChatGPT, Grammarly, QuillBot, Canva, Blackbox, Cici AI, and Gemini. The perceived benefits include ease of accessing references (42.86%), faster task completion (28.57%), and improved understanding of Educational Statistics material (19.05%). In addition, AI was considered helpful in enhancing conceptual understanding (mean score 3.38) and facilitating the completion of academic tasks (mean score 3.71). However, students also reported several challenges, such as limited ability to optimize AI features, slow internet connectivity, and concerns regarding academic ethics and potential plagiarism. These findings indicate that while AI has substantial potential as an academic support tool, strengthening digital literacy and establishing ethical and contextual AI usage guidelines are essential in Islamic higher education settings.
